My Spring Bucket List

Happy 1st Day of Spring!

Today is the first day of Spring and although it has been quite chilly the last couple of days, today is definitely a Spring day. The sun is shining, the temps are in the 60's, and we are excited about what's to come this season.

Years past, I have always created a Spring & Summer bucket list, but this year, I thought I would break it down more and just start with a Spring bucket list. This is a pretty simple list to start off with, and more than likely, we will continue to add to it.

springbucketlist

Exciting, huh? I can hardly believe I will be running my first 5k in less than 3 weeks. And holy cow, my oldest will be 16 this year! I feel like I just graduated from high school myself. I look forward to sharing it all along the way.

What do you have on your Spring Bucket List? I would love to hear about some of the things you have planned this Spring.

pollen season with claritin

IMG_3445

we thought we had made it through winter cold season unscathed, until january got here and the first of us got a cold. i clearly remember it was phoenix. she felt bad, stayed out of school (which she never does), and ended up with a cough that lasted for weeks after that.

then, mackenzie got sick, and every single time she coughed, i am certain she made sure i was within a few feet so she could cough right in my direction. i just knew i would be next!

of course... i was! and just a couple days after that, so was elijah. elijah developed his very first ear infection along with his, and both of our colds lasted FOREVER!

right at the tail end of my cold, mackenzie got another cold and by then i felt like i was loosing my mind. finally, when i was just a few days away from what i KNEW was the last of my cold, i suddenly took a u-turn back in the opposite direction. i was coughing, mackenzie was coughing, and suddenly elijah was coughing again too. we had been sick for nearly a month.

at a routine check up, mackenzie's doctor mentioned that colds don't typically last that long and asked whether we had considered allergies. honestly, it didn't even cross my mind. i just thought it was a bad cold year for us. but coincidentally, i was offered an opportunity to try out children's claritin, so i jumped all over it.

elijah started coughing easter weekend and i was about to break down and cry i was so tired of all the sickness. we even canceled our plans to see my dad and sister on easter since we weren't sure if what he had was contagious. monday, the children's claritin arrived and i popped one of the little purple pills out and gave it to elijah. literally, by the next morning, his cough had subsided and he was already acting like himself. i gave it to him a couple more days and he was better. at first i just considered that maybe it was coincidental and that maybe he was just at the tail end of a short cold, so i wasn't convinced yet.

does claritin really work?

a couple weeks later the pollen started. the pollen this year is atrocious! it hasn't rained nearly enough so it has been everywhere. as soon as the pollen started falling, i noticed that elijah began coughing again one morning so i started giving him the children's claritin again. i have been giving it to him every morning for a couple weeks now and he has yet to show any signs or symptoms of a cold or that the pollen is even bothering him. i'd say it works! nothing is worse than watching your child be miserable, and having no control over it. children's claritin has been a life saver for my little guy.

children's claritin comes in a chewable form, as well as a liquid version. it's non-drowsy formula won't make children, especially older children who attend school, feel tired and sluggish throughout their day. elijah prefers the chewable kind, but probably just because it is different than the tons of other liquid medicines he has been taking. he calls them his "chewies" and even at 3 he has no problem taking them, since they dissolve easily on his tongue. they both have a great flavor that he loves.

i am sold on the claritin and plan to keep it in our medicine cabinet as a permanent part of our seasonal cold remedy for my whole family!

sponge balls

last summer i saw these on summer's blog, crosbie crew during her boys of summer series. i had it in the back of my head to pick up sponges every time we went to the store, but every time i got sidetracked and forgot.

this year, i finally added them to our 2012 spring and summer bucket list and picked up two packs of sponges at target for just a dollar each the other day.

let me just say that these have been a big hit around our house. several times now, the kids have gone outside to have sponge ball water fights.

here is summer's quick sponge ball tutorial. be sure to check out all of her other boy's of summer activities as well.

my 2012 spring & summer bucket list

 bucket list

to celebrate today being the first day of spring, i decided to go ahead and get a jump start on my spring and summer bucket list. it's no secret that i absolutely love the spring and summer. once november hits every year, i am pretty much already wishing for spring already.

although spring has come way too early this year, i am not complaining. the last couple of weeks have been amazing and i can't wait to dive into some fun activities with the hubs and kids.

Yesterday was a beautiful day. Today is going to be even better. High in the 80's today. Woo hoo! #sky #NCweatherPerfect!

here are all the things i hope to accomplish this spring and summer:

1.  read one book a month. or more.
2.  go at least one day a month with no tv. music is a must though.

5.  go to the beach and build a sandcastle
6.  get a tan
7.  make homemade popsicles
8.  exercise for 30 days in a row
9.  have a picnic
10.  play in the rain
11.  make homemade lemonade
12.  hang out at the pool as much as possible
13.  pedicures and manicures with my girls (a couple times a month would be great)
14.  pullen park day
15.  cook out on the grill a lot. these sound good: shish kabobs, hamburgers, grilled corn
16.  busch gardens days
17.  built an indoor fort
18.  roast marshmallows over a fire and make s'mores
19.  sidewalk chalk artwork
20.  christmas in july with homemade gifts only

22.  geocaching
23.  put a puzzle together with the kids
24.  drive-in movies
25.  buy fruits and veggies at the farmer's market
26.  make spongeballs and have a fight
27.  make ziplock bag icecream
28.  go on lots of walks
29.  plant tomatoes
30.  have "dessert first dinner"
31.  have a family game night
32.  make root beer floats

if i come up with any more, i will be sure to add them to the list. i would love to see what you come up with too. if you do a bucket list, please share the link in the comments and i will check it out.

Thanks for this nice day mother nature. Get yourself together and don't piss me off with a cold day tomorrow.

my 2011 spring & summer bucket list

last year i did a summer bucket list, and although i feel like i did accomplish most of what i put on my list, i wanted to get a head start this year on the things i want to accomplish most. i am usually more productive when the days are longer, the sun is shining, and the weather is warm.

and if you come here often, you know i'm a list maker, so if i see it in a list and i can check it off, then i tend to get it done a lot faster.

my time frame will be from may 1 - september 1.

my 2011 spring & summer bucket list
joni collage
  1. read at least 10 books
  2. lose 10 lbs. a month
  3. go back to church at least 2 sundays a month (preferably more)
  4. hand write at least 4 letters
  5. see at least one movie a month at the drive-in
  6. take a busch gardens/water country usa trip once a month
  7. go fishing
  8. go on a picnic
  9. cook hot dogs and smores with friends in our fire pit
  10. grow a veggie garden

easter weekend randoms

 easter 2011

1. we shopped very last minute for our kids easter gifts. like 10:00 p.m. the night before. but they were happy and that's all that matters.

2. why, at nearly 5 years old and nearly 6 years old, are tyler and phoenix SUDDENLY scared of the easter bunny? so scared they wanted me to either put their baskets outside for him to fill or call him and tell him not to come.

3. i found three 4-leaf clovers this weekend. i am pretty sure something super awesome is coming my way.

4. i won't be renting another movie from one of those box kiosks anytime soon because i NEVER return them on time. i have one to return now. it was due two days ago.

5. elijah definitely ate the most candy this weekend. he has an addiction to sugar and may need an intervention.

6. we watched toy story 3 a total of 6 times this weekend. i love this movie, but i am almost positive i don't love it that much. however, elijah definitely does because all i have to say when he is having a temper tantrum is "wanna go watch woodie?" and he runs to the tv.

7. i also love milky way dark chocolate bars. ask me if i love them enough to eat 10 miniature ones. i will probably say yes.

8. i love my family! that is a fact! i knew that way before this weekend.

this is my first stop-motion video. and for working with my kids on this and trying to get them to work with me, i think i did a pretty good job.

btw...i looped the video so you could view it a few times! and for some reason the text is blurry but readable.

how to be a redneck

step 1: drag out the lawnmower.

step 2: give rides around the neighborhood to your kids.

lawnmower man 3lawnmower man 2

lawnmower man 1

looks like a great way to test out the lawnmower and get it ready for spring to me!

but just for the record...we are not rednecks. (or are we?)

wordless(ish) wednesday | daddy's work helmet

so if you all don't already know, jason works for directv. he absolutely loves his job! which makes me so happy because his job is the reason i get to stay home every day.

recently, the guys at directv were issued these brand new super cool work helmets and elijah enjoyed being just like daddy as he wore it around the neighborhood this past weekend.

i call him my little clone trooper when he wears it!

i heart faces | anything but a face!

tyler on bike

we definitely enjoyed the 80 degree weather that warmed our area this weekend.

tyler is able to reach the peddles on her bike this year and mackenzie and ryan have mastered the rip stick. a family stroll was so refreshing and i can not wait until the day that i know for sure that the bright sunshine and warm weather of the next day is going to be just like the last. today is another 80 degree day, but tomorrow the temps drop back down and so does my good mood.

so for now, i am going to enjoy it as much as possible!
