Come In We're Awesome! A Barn Owl Primitives Review and Giveaway

This year has definitely been one of change for me. I started the year off losing weight, I took a slight blogging break to reassess what I wanted out of this space, we purchased new furniture and made some decor changes, and I even started adding pieces that were more personal to our home. Things that reflect who we are as a family.

 BOP

One thing we recently added was a piece from Barn Owl Primitives. I had been wanting a piece from this amazing company for quite some time, so when I had the opportunity to get one, I never realized how difficult it would be to decide which piece to get. I know I went back and forth with my decision for several days before finally deciding on the Come In We're Awesome/Sorry We're Closed Distressed Sign. It was actually a sign I overlooked each time I browsed through.

We are a pretty silly family and we use a lot of humor get us through each day, especially those tough times. I often joke that we would make a pretty great reality TV series. After looking through the signs one last time, I came across the Come In We're Awesome sign and knew immediately that it was the one we should have. Shockingly, we have had no company since it showed up and I sat it near our front door, but every afternoon as my girls come in from off the bus, they say "Come In We're Awesome!" as they walk through the door.

I am so happy with the choice I made and for years to come I will look at that sign and remember these days as they walk through the door at the end of each day. I am so impressed with these signs. I have made my own signs and they just don't even come close to the quality of a Barn Owl sign and I am confident they will stand the test of time.

Excitingly enough, Barn Owl Primitives has so kindly offered to giveaway $50 to use toward anything in their shop.

Some of my other choices while shopping were the Creativity Take Courage sign, The Vintage Style Reindeer Names sign, and the Trust in the Lord Word Art Sign. I also loved this Ice Hockey Typography Sign because we are big hockey fans. There are so many wonderful choices that you could spend that $50 on, so be sure to enter below!

5 things we learned from our trip to the zoo

a few weeks ago we took a day trip to the beach and went to one of the NC aquariums while we were there. as we were purchasing our tickets to get in, the sales woman suggested we buy the one year family passes. at first, i just kind of thought to myself, "yeah, yeah, whatever. who's going to spend that much money, and who goes to the aquarium that many times in one year? but, then she informed us it would only cost us an additional $6 to purchase the one year pass as opposed to a one day pass. so i figured, what the heck, maybe we will come at least one more time. but then, she continued to inform us that in addition to being able to get into the aquarium, we would have access to dozens of other aquariums and zoos across the country at no additional charge. hot dog, sign us up! grand total: $60 for 2 adults and 6 children for one full year.

moral of the story... always check the membership fees because it could be the better deal!

and that's how we ended up planning a trip to the zoo.

labor day weekend, we headed to asheboro, NC where our largest state zoo is. the last time we took a trip to the zoo, i was pregnant with elijah, so this was his first trip. with six kids, you can't please everyone, someone is going to be hungry, someone is going to be thirsty, and someone is going to get tired. here are a few things we learned from our trip to the zoo that we will most certainly keep in mind for our next trip.

zoo_PTE

1. take the tram all the way to the end, first thing, and then walk back.

the NC zoo is not designed in a complete circle, therefor, you have to walk all the way to the end and back, or take the tram. next time, we will most definitely hop on the tram first thing, while we are still fresh, excited, and full of energy. by the time we were at the end, our kids were ready to go! they most definitely didn't want to walk back and even standing to wait for the tram was traumatic for them. in their defense, it was a hot day, and i was pretty ready to go too.

2. don't go on a really hot day.

you will sweat and you may even be miserable. not, to mention, many of the animals will be too hot to move and will more than likely be hiding somewhere to keep cool. although we got lucky with the elephants, the polar bears, and the grizzly bear, many of the animals like the gorillas and chimps, were no where to be found.

zoo_grizzly bear

polarbear2

3. bring a backpack filled with supplies

this one we actually did! I filled a backpack with water bottles, a few snacks, and not much else to carry along the way. having a backpack frees up your hands to take pictures with a camera or grab unruly kids.

jason

4. wear tennis shoes

this is kind of a no brainer, but you wouldn't believe how many people i saw wearing flip flops. you will be doing a lot of walking if you want the best views of the animals.

5. take a look at the zoo map and mark which animals you want to see most

by the time we left the zoo, we had some kids screaming they were ready to go and some that were screaming they wanted to see other animals. a good idea is to take a look at the park map by either pulling it up at home before you go or when you arrive. if this is a once in a lifetime trip, then of course you are probably going to want to see everything. however, since we have passes, a good idea would have been to let each child pick the one animal they absolutely did not want to miss and then decide as a family what else you want to see. if you know you will have the opportunity to come back, then trying to make your way through every single animal is not a must.

zoo_elijah_gorilla

we had a great time at the zoo, but one thing that was a bit overwhelming for us was elijah's incredibly short attention span. some of the animals didn't phase him one bit and almost seemed to entertain him as much as a photograph of that animal would have. at one point, i remember picking him up to show him one of the animals, his eyes locked on it, he said "wow" in his most unenthusiastic voice, and then screamed for me to put him down... where he promptly ran over to play with a stick. seriously? we did a lot of chasing after him all day and jason and I pretty much gave up really trying to look at the animals ourselves, or really enjoying the experience with the rest of the children, just to make sure we didn't loose sight of elijah.

how would you suggest handling this situation? at one point we thought a baby leash was a good idea. i have always kind of despised those things and never had to use one on any of my other children. how do you feel about them?

10 things on tuesday

1. i watched the movie, people like us, yesterday and cried like a baby at the end. such a great movie! if you haven't seen it, you should!

2. right now i am playing single mom while jason is away from home doing some national guard training. he has been gone before, but for some reason, we really miss him the most this go round.

3. i have my first senior session lined up this month and i am super excited about it. i haven't used my camera nearly enough lately, so this will be good.

4. i have been so crafty lately, but sadly i don't really have any of it to share with you guys. i get so wrapped up in the actual activity that i don't even think about taking pics. so far i have painted another chalkboard, dip painted some baskets, made a polka dotted hair wrap, and animal topped canning jar lids.

5. father's day is coming up and i LOVE my dad! i have decided to find an old crate and fill it with lots of specialty foods and snacks from trader joe's and world market for my dad. he LOVES that sort of thing.

6. i have stepped up my workout game by adding in a video workout in the morning and running in the afternoon. i am feeling the best i have felt in a long time lately!

7. next week is phoenix's birthday and i have no idea what i am going to do for her yet. i am such a slacker mom. i am thinking i will bake cupcakes since i take pride in my cupcake making skills, and have a ice cream bar to go along with it. something simple.

8. two things i have been wanting terribly lately... a pool and a trampoline. my mom used to have an in ground pool at her old house and i was spoiled to that luxury. not a summer goes by that i don't think about that pool and all the fun we used to have there every summer. lately, i have really been missing it. AND, we used to have a trampoline but it got old and started to become unsafe and now i really want another one! (totally for the kids here!)

9. jason and i have discussed a serious move next year and i am already getting the itch to start the process. we have totally outgrown this house and our children need a bigger space. perhaps our new home can have a pool? that would be... AWESOME!

10. i would love to win $50 from shabby apple over at vintch. i have had the toe the line dress on my wishlist for awhile now and fell in love with the gondola dress too recently.

Such a beautiful day! #iheartNC

10 things on tuesday

1. as of this morning i have lost 19 lbs. and i am so pumped about it! i has been a long hard couple of months but totally worth it now!

2. now that the walking dead has ended for the season, i haven't really watched too much tv. i have been watching the client list (currently in it's second season) and the new show bates motel.

two new shows

3. i am in love with this amazing piece that crystal over at flavor pink painted for me. she is so amazingly talented!

4. it finally warmed up enough around here for me to take photos of my BFF amanda and her little family recently. it's back to cold again right now. *thumbs down!

dement_spring_1dement_spring_7

5. i jumped back into couponing again. i was going strong a couple years ago but i got burned out because i was trying to go to every store in town to use my coupons. i am sticking to one store this time... CVS!

6. i just did our spring and summer bucket list for this year and am so excited to share it with you later this week.

7. have you ever been over to flylady? i am using some of the methods learned there and my house has never been so clean lately. a clean house puts me in the best mood!

8. this video had elijah laughing so hard, that i was laughing so hard, and i nearly peed my pants.

9. there are so many movies coming soon, between now and august, that i am anxious to see! it is going to be a great summer for movies for sure!

10. i started my container garden for the year and i just hope this cold weather doesn't kill my plants. this year we have tomatoes, serrano peppers, jalapeno peppers, cayenne peppers, cilantro, and basil. if i grew some onions we would have all we needed for salsa!

And 3 kinda of hot peppers including these two: Serrano and Cayenne. There's also Jalapeños in another pot. #containergarden #gardenWe've got cilantro this year! My favorite! #containergarden #gardenThis little $3 attachment for our hose makes it so easy to water my container garden. I turned it on yesterday and the kids actually thought it was raining outside.

the plague

Cough drops, NyQuil, couch, and movies. ALL. DAY. LONG.it moved in silently and took us over like helpless hostages. it started with phoenix a couple weeks ago. she stayed home from school, something she NEVER does. the child would rather have her fingers bit off by a rabid dog than miss school, but she came to me that morning not feeling well and wanting to stay home. then, it moved on to mackenzie and she stayed sick an entire 3-day weekend and stayed out of school 2 days after that. every time i looked up she was practically showering me with her coughs and i just knew i would be next.

and that is exactly what happened!

i was able to rewatch all the seasons of the walking dead and a long list of movies during the last couple of weeks. i honestly had no energy to do anything else. i had just gotten my laundry caught up, but now it's backed up again. dammit!

today is the first day in two weeks i have been online or even thought about coming here to my blog. i am not fully recovered, but i am enough to finally have a little pep in my step and a slight smile on my face. a cold like this will definitely make you grateful for even the crappiest of cold winter days. i had been wishing for spring, but now i just wish i could stop coughing. i seriously spend well over $50+ on nyquil, mucinex pills, mucinex liquid, 2 bags of halls cough drops, a bag of halls vitamin c drops, and a box of cold-eeze zinc drops.

this has been the worst sickness i have had in years.

hope you all are doing well!

10 things on tuesday (including the borax winners!)

1. it snowed again this past friday. actually, it wasn't even snow, more like ice. an inch of ice everywhere. nc winters are really ridiculous!

2. i have been extremely tired lately. like, so tired that i slept almost all day saturday and sunday, which is not like me at all. then last night, i fell asleep on the couch and slept so hard i was dreaming. i have been known to fall asleep on the couch quite often, but to actually dream, no way! and, i really don't know why i would be so tired either.

3. i am trying to do a low-carb. diet, which is actually pretty easy, except that i am now starting to realize why i have gained so much weight... every damn thing i was eating is some form of pasta, bread, or rice. the meal below was a low-carb recipe from emeals.

My low carb @Emeals dinner. Used to be on their portion control plan but just switched to the low carb plan and am loving it. #emeals #dinner #foodporn #lowcarb

4. on his way to work this morning, jason had a tire blowout! i am so glad he is okay, but i am even more glad it was him and not me. one of my biggest fears while driving is a blowout. not to mention, i have never changed a tire in my life.

5. the new vine app... yeah, i'm there! (@sixcherries) but honestly, i'm not that into it.

6. those christmas boxes that were still in my living room last week... still there!

7. did i mention jason joined the national guard? he left the marines in 2008, but decided he wanted to finish out his military career and retire. he still works for directv as well, but doesn't have many more years before he can retire from the military. what will he be doing? he will be in the CBRN defense unit.

Sgt. Moore reporting for Daddy duty. #mrmaraschino

8. do you love my new look? this is only about the 20th time i have changed it in the last few months. let's hope i keep this look for awhile, right?

9. some blogs i have really been enjoying lately are flavorpink, pillow thought, and breanna rose. you should definitely check them out, if you don't already!

10. the winners of the 20 mule team borax giveaway are: cori w., rachel g., and debbie w. winners should be on the lookout for an email from me. thanks to everyone who entered!

my trip to the ER

i have been in pain since saturday but finally broke down and took a trip to the ER last night. i honestly had no idea what it was and was a little reluctant to make the trip. nothing like going to the ER and having them tell you, you just need to go home, take a laxative, and poop. ha! that's never happened to me, but i am sure it has happened to someone. i would be pretty upset about a diagnosis like that after paying a $125 copay. i had blood work done and a CT scan for a blood clot in my left lung. did you know that the mirena IUD puts you at a higher risk for this type of thing? I'm actually okay and will be on meds for a bit.

but hey, speaking of CT scans...UGH! have you ever had one? i personally disliked every second of it. if you have never had one or had someone tell you about it, they basically put you on a bed, flat on your back, pump this fluid into your body through an IV, and roll you through a giant donut and make you hold your breath. the worst part is the stuff they put in the IV. it makes your whole body feel hot, then you feel like you are going to pee all over yourself. and then, for me, i got very nauseous and dizzy, then very shaky and cold. of course, not feeling like myself gives me a little bit of anxiety, which turned into a headache, so...not fun!

2012 raleigh christmas parade

the raleigh christmas parade is always in november around here. i'm not sure why, but with all the festivities going on in december, it's nice to have the parade during november. this was the first year jason and i have gone together to the raleigh christmas parade. we usually attend a different parade, but it is nothing like the raleigh parade. the raleigh christmas parade is held in downtown raleigh and is the largest christmas parade between washington d.c. and atlanta. you pretty much have to get there a couple hours early if you want to get a good spot, especially with kids.

it was super cold, so i got up early to make coffee and hot chocolate for your thermoses and to bundle up the kiddos in their warmest winter gear. we also went to the parade with my best friend amanda, her husband rick, and their daughter gracie... oh, and little gabriel in mommy's belly {grin}, so the fun was definitely doubled having them there. the parade was great and i love seeing all of the local people i see on tv and listen to on the radio, the businesses i enjoy, and the high schools my friends and i went to growing up. i also love gossiping and people watching! hey, don't judge! we all do it and you know it!

i took a ton of photos, but here are just a few of them.

we had such a great time, but as much fun as we all had, there was one little stinker in the bunch. elijah pretty much screamed that he wanted to go home the entire time. we had to buy an entire box of doughnuts just to get him to cease the screaming for a few minutes, but even with that, he started up again as soon as he was finished. i am starting to wonder if we are getting him out enough because he has been saying this a lot when we take him out lately. the boy is a homebody!

do you go to the christmas parade in your area every year? what is your favorite part of the parade?

friday night ramblings and some photos

well, i screwed up my NABLOPOMO goal for the month. i was doing so well and then suddenly this week sped into view and all hell broke loose around here. i have been so incredibly busy! it's so hard to get anything done when i have all the kids at home, but it has been nice to spend the extra time with them.

we had a wonderful thanksgiving with my dad and step mother. i've said it before, but my step mother should totally have her own cooking show on the food network. the woman has spent her entire life perfecting her cooking and i bet she has collected over 1000 cookbooks throughout her life. i seriously don't ever recall anything she has made that wasn't good.

there is nothing better or more important to me than family time and home cooked meals during the holidays. i love that both jason and i share this common value. my fondest memory of this thanksgiving will always be jason and my dad playing soccer with the kids in the yard (photos coming of course)!

black friday shopping...ugh! not my thing at all! i do most of my christmas shopping online every year. a few tips to those who are afraid to shop online...
  1. gather a wish list from your kids. we have been using giftbirdy and we love it!
  2. start comparing prices early on. once black friday arrives, you will know whether or not the item is on sale and whether you need to wait until cyber monday. if it's not on sale on black friday, wait until cyber monday before settling.
  3.  once you have shopped, be sure to check websites like retail me not for coupon codes for even more discounts.
  4. check with your place of employment for discounts. jason works for directv, so we get additional discounts on a huge list of stores like best buy, target, and more.
  5. if you aren't offered free shipping, or you can't find a coupon code for free shipping, call the company and ask for it. i NEVER pay for shipping!
  6. while you are on the phone with the company, ask about any other unadvertised offers. i was able to get 20% off my order plus a one year subscription to rachael ray magazine last year just by calling customer service at rachaelray.com
the best part about shopping online is that you can do it right in the comfort of your home, in your pajamas (or in the nude, if that's your thing).

halloween is definitely my favorite holiday, but for some reason i just wasn't that into it this year and i have really been looking forward to christmas. i have planned some super fun activities for the kids and i just want to take it all in. i even made an advent calendar with activities for each day of december that i will be sure to share with you sometime soon.

last weekend, we went to the raleigh christmas parade and also hopped over to the wake forest seminary for a quick mini session with a cute little family for some fall photos. i will be sure to share our parade photos sometime this week, but in the meantime, please enjoy a few of the photos i took at the seminary.

the rest of the weekend is for spending time with my kids before they head back to school. ever seen the show total blackout? we are totally creating our own version of total blackout tomorrow night and i am pretty excited about it! this coming week i will also be just as busy trying to play catch up, plus, my birthday this week, and my best friend, amanda, who is having her baby shower next weekend. little gabriel will be here in no time.

tell me about your week! what's been on your mind or keeping you busy?
