The Polyvore Files | Edgy Valentine

Some people look at Valentine's Day as a pointless day, and that people should love each other, the way they love on Valentine's Day, all year long. Of course, my love for Jason doesn't become greater just because it is a specific day of the year, however, having that day does kind of force us to take the time for each other that we, personally, don't always have for each other. It doesn't mean we don't love each other, it just means we can take the time to spend on "us" without feelings of guilt.

Jason is such a busy guy working outside of the home to provide financially for our family, and I am an equally busy woman, taking care our home. I do have my own income coming in to help as well, and he does help me at home also, and certainly helps with the kids.  But to describe our roles in this family, it is Jason's job to provide financially, and it is my job to take care of the children and things at home. And because we are the parents of six children, we often don't take the time to focus on us. Therefor, when Valentine's Day comes around, we try hard to make that day special because it is our day for each other.

This year, we nearly missed our day together because Jason had been called to duty to help with emergency services for the state during the snow and ice storms passing through NC. We daydreamed of a fabulous dinner and night at the Broadway show, The Book of Mormon. It was also important to us because Jason will be leaving for Missouri in two weeks. His schedule, the weather, and the fact that we waited until the last minute anyways, threatened our chance at some alone time. 

Things have a funny way of working out though, and although we didn't get our big night out, Jason did make it home and we did get our time and were able to go out for sushi and drinks. I would have loved to wear an outfit like the creation I made this week in Polyvore.We have already started discussing one of those special nights out when he gets back from Missouri.

Quick & Simple Valentines Snack

This is a simple alternative to the Baked Tortilla Chips I shared a while back. The chips are the same, except this time, I used the heart shape miniature cookie cutter from The Pampered Chef Creative Cutters set I have. However, this time, I created a quick little Valentine's Day dip to go along with it.

This little dip is so easy that it doesn't even deserve to be called a recipe, but it is sure to win the hearts of your children because it is jammed packed with sweetness. This is definitely not something you would want to share with them on a regular basis, unless paying dental bills is a hobby for you. 


Cherry flavored Kool-Aid Dip

You will need:

• 8 oz. Cool Whip (thawed)
• 8 oz. Cream cheese (softened)
• 8 oz. Marshmallow cream
• 1-2 Cherry flavored Kool-Aid Singles packs
• Sprinkles (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a Kitchen Aid (or use a hand mixer), and whip until smooth. Set in refrigerator until ready to serve. Add sprinkles before serving. Serve with Baked Tortilla Chips. Enjoy!

                    

Disney's Frozen Olaf Valentine's with Free Printable Tags

 

I have seen some similar Valentine's like this floating around, but when I saw them, I just knew I wanted to do a collab with Crystalyn over at Flavor Pink to come up with our very own version of these cute Valentine handouts. All three of my youngest children love the Frozen movie, so there was no question that these were the perfect Valentine's for their friends at church. Crystalyn did an amazing job coming up with these Olaf tags to go on each bag. Each Valentine includes a snack of "parts" to create your very own Olaf the Snowman, and perfect for kids of all ages.

Not only is this a fun little snack (because how often do we actually allow our kids to play with their food?), but it is a great activity for your child to do themselves. I actually made a little chart for Elijah to go by that showed him with a picture and number, how many of each item to put in each bag. He had fun helping me put them together, and practiced his counting at the same time. Phoenix and Tyler were able to cut each Olaf tag, glue them, and tie them on each bag as well.

Olaf Valentines

 You will need: 

• Jumbo Marshmallows (1 per bag)
• Regular Size Marshmallows (2 per bag)
• Mini Marshmallows (2 per bag)
• Pretzel Sticks (2 per bag)
• Chocolate Chips (5 per bag)
• Candy Corns (1 per bag)
• Clear Plastic bags
• Baker's Twine
• Free Printable Disney's Frozen Olaf Tags

Fill each clear plastic bag with the number of ingredients required and then close using the baker's twine. Cut out the Olaf tag and attach before tying it closed. I used red card stock for the backing and glued them on, but you can simply print these on white card stock and cut them out as well. Just punch and hole in the top and thread the bakers twine through, then tie in a bow.

Kool-Aid Valentine Handouts

 

For years now, I have always made my children their Valentines for friends at school. Last year, I spent the day before Valentine's Day, sewing last minute hand warmers for 50 children. This year, I have my idea in mind and I am not waiting until the last minute to get them done!

I teamed up with Chelsea over at Chelsea Beeswax, to come up with these super cute Valentines. While they are chowing down on all that sugar other friends give them, they can wash it all down with some more sugar, with these super cute Kool-Aid Valentines. Honestly, I am not a big fan of giving my kids this kind of stuff, but they only live once and holidays don't apply to the no sugar rule in our house!

 

Kool-Aid Valentines

You will need:

• 16oz.-20oz. water bottles (one for each child)
• Kool-Aid Singles in Cherry (or the flavor of your choice)
• Paper straws
• Baker's twine
• "You're So KOOL Valentine!" Free Printable

For the water bottle:

Remove the original product label on the water bottle. Cut out the free printable label and apply where the original label was. I chose to simply tape mine in place, allowing a small bit of the tape to overlap onto the bottle to hold it in place. 

Using baker's twine, tie on one Kool-Aid Singles and a straw. I actually used a piece of tape on the back of the Kool-Aid pack to hold that in place as well!

Before you tie the bow in the twine, apply one of the tags if you would like.

Alternate method:

If purchasing water bottles is not in your budget, or if you are just looking for something, not so bulky, a great alternative to this is to not include the water bottle. Simply tie baker's twine around one Kool-Aid Singles pack, along with a straw and free printable tag, and you are done!

 

Chelsea did an awesome job creating these super "kool" water bottle labels and tags to go along with them, and Phoenix and Tyler are so excited to give them to their friends. Be sure to head over to Chelsea's blog to print some of these tags for yourself!

Cherry Kool-Aid Valentine Cookies... with Red Velvet M&M's

I told you I would have a few posts including these Kool-Aid packets I purchased recently, so here is another one. Not only are these cookies super cute and pink for Valentine's Day, they are pretty tasty too. Elijah told me no less than 5 times that they were the "best cookies ever"! Originally I was just going to throw in the Kool-Aid and call it a day, but then I found these red velvet M&M's and my mind was blown. Why is the heck didn't they have these back at Christmas to use in some kind of red velvet cookies with crushed candy cane pieces mixed in? 

So, basically, these cookies are as simple as, whipping up a batch of basic homemade cookie mix, then throwing in:

• 2 Cherry flavored Kool-Aid Singles packets 
• 1/2 cup Red Velvet M&M's

Bake according to directions.

 

I also took a packet of the Cherry Kool-Aid mix and mixed it with milk to go along with the cookies. Why didn't I think of this before? Do you ever think you are the first person ever to come up with an idea only to go over to Pinterest and discover you are like 2 decades late to that game? I'm not even going over there to check. Kool-Aid Milk... Yep, I invented it! Ha!
