Five Faves: Adult Halloween Costumes

I have never actually attended a real Halloween party, but I sometimes fantasize about attending one, or even perhaps throwing one of my own. I wanna bob for boogers, germs, and saliva in a bucket full of apples and water, I want to learn all the moves ahead of time and rock the dance floor to Michael Jackson's Thriller, I want to conjure up spirits during a seance (ha, not really, that kind of shit scares the hell out of me), play the Halloween Mummy Relay with all my adult friends, and I want to have an A-MAZ-ING costume.

The last time I dressed up was about 5 years ago and I was Princess Leia. We dressed as Star Wars characters as a whole family, and looking back at those photos, I could have tried a smidge harder with that little ensemble I wore.

Here are five of my favorite adult costume finds. I bet if I were dressed as that mummy, no one would even recognize me. Well, maybe the fact that I am only 5 ft. tall would give me away!

•  I am not big on those big, puffy, or whimsical fonts, so this font is the perfect Halloween font without all the showboating that some of those crazy fonts have going on. 
• I love this printable because I am a huge fan of the 80's movies, and Ghostbusters is definitely a favorite and on my list of Halloween movies to watch every year!
• Sometimes you just don't want the typical orange pumpkins and scarecrows adorning your porch. This is definitely a look that fits my style. 
• Black candy apples? More like poison apples! I need to make these immediately!
• These grenadine syringes for Shirley Temple drinks are the perfect addition to any Halloween party! I bet these could be used for "adult" drinks too!
• I want these spider plates like it's nobody's business! They are beautiful and creepy all at the same time and would love to eat my dinner from them every day of October!
• If I were dressing up this year, I would love to dress up as Mary Poppins! One of my favorite movies as a child. 
• Giving out treats to your friends this Halloween? Maybe even those black apples? These would look so awesome as gift tags on your poison apples!
• I have seen everyone painting pumpkins this year! This is a quick and simple pumpkin painting craft for kids of all ages. Red legged spiders would be pretty creepy!

I've said it 2.4 million times, and I will say it again... Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I couldn't go without sharing some of my favorite Halloween things and Pinterest finds lately.

• That font is basically Ichabod Cranes handwriting turned into a font. Elegant and creepy all at the same time. 
• I framed this Trick-or-Treat print and have it sitting on the bench near our front door. 
• Good Housekeeping has some great ideas for decorating your home for Halloween!
• I have been making these dirt cups for several years and my kids love them. Such a quick and simple snack!
• Vampire Halloween party anyone? 
• These Hocus Pocus pillows remind me of one of my favorite Halloween movies. Can you guess what movie that is?
• I had this big plan that my kids would be doing the whole Little Red Riding Hood theme for Halloween this year. It still might happen, but I think the fact that Elijah is set on being Iron Man may put a damper on my little dream. I just might have to dress up as Red myself. Jason can be the handsome huntsman!
• Still reminding you to always encourage others. Making these treat bags as a random act of kindness have been a great way to teach our kids to give to others.
• Fun and simple craft for kids. A great thing for those fine motor skills of little ones too!

                    

diy felt christmas ornaments

i had a bunch of felt that was left over from another project a while back and i wanted to find a use for it. naturally, since it was close to christmas, i searched christmas and felt and so many amazing things came up that i could make. then i came across a cute little owl and knew that i wanted to make that first. 

i really didn't follow any directions, i just eyeballed it and started cutting the felt. however, here are some super simple instructions for the christmas tree ornament i made. the fox was definitely the most challenging, but once you have mastered the basic steps i am sure it won't be so intimidating.

here are the materials you will need for these projects:

• felt in a variety of colors
• scissors
• dmc floss in the colors of your choice
• sewing thread in the color of your choice
• needles (one large enough to thread dmc floss and one for regular sewing thread)
• cotton filler
• fabric glue (optional) 
• ribbon (optional)

you will also need to know how to do a basic hand stitch, a back stitch, and a button hole stitch. 

felt christmas tree ornament

felt colors you will need: dark green, light green, any variety of colors for the small "ornaments" on the tree

 

1. cut the dark green felt into the shape of a christmas tree (be sure to keep in mind the size that you want). cut 2 of the same pieces of the dark green tree shape. cut a triangle out of the light green fabric just a bit smaller than the dark green tree shape. cut 6 small circle shapes out of the fabric colors for the "ornaments". 

2. cut the light green triangle into three pieces (see below). using the fabric glue, place the three pieces on top of the dark green tree shape. you can stop here and move on to the next step, or you can use the dmc floss in a contrasting color to sew around the edges of each light green piece using a basic hand stitch. 

3. using white dmc floss and a back stitch, sew on the "string" for the ornament garland. do this on all three pieces of the light green felt. 

4. using the white dmc floss or some basic white thread. sew the ornaments onto the "string". 3 on the lower one, 2 in the middle, and one on the top. 

5. take the other dark green tree shape and place it on the back of the decorated side of the tree. using a button hole stitch. sew around the edge of the tree, leaving a one inch opening at the bottom. 

6. fill the tree to your liking and then finish off your button hole stitch to the end. 

7. slip a piece of ribbon or dmc floss through one of the loops in the button hole stitch at the top of the tree and tie it off to give it a way to hang it.  that's it!

now go hang it on your tree or attach it to a gift to add a extra something special. 

if you were paying attention, you would have seen in the pictures that i actually jumped the gun and sewed the tree together before adding the "ornaments". i actually forgot to put them on but it can be done this way. however, it is a bit more of a pain in the neck.
