Dressing My New Body with Mary & Mak

Since loosing so much weight in the last year, my style has definitely changed. I was so self conscious of how I looked before and often wore clothes that hid all of the rolls and trouble spots. I felt very frumpy and unattractive, and didn't even enjoy shopping for clothes for myself because I knew that no matter how beautiful the pieces were, they just weren't going to look that great on my body.

However, since I've lost the weight, I have been more excited about shopping for clothes. I enjoy putting outfits together on Polyvore, going into shops and trying things on that actually fit my body, and looking in the mirror at a body that I am proud of. I'm no supermodel, but I have a body that I worked hard to get, and it has opened up a door to a whole new me. A me that loves eating healthy, working out, and dressing in feminine clothes.

Mary & Mak is a clothing boutique dedicated to preppy and trendy fashions that are right up my alley. Even before having children, I have never been one to show off my body. Luckily, with Mary & Mak fashions, you can still have that sexy feminine flair, and still leave some of it up to the imagination. They are so versatile I could definitely wear any of these pieces during a day out with my family, a night out with Jason, or even to church on Sunday. And surprisingly, even Mackenzie has been eyeballing some of the Mary & Mak pieces for herself, like the Navy Anchor Cap Sleeve Dress and the 5-Pocket JeggingsLuckily there is a Mary & Mak in our area, so Mackenzie and I are already planning a mother/daughter date to go shopping.

Sartorial Kid | A Jeans and T-shirt Kind of Gal

Although at first glance Phoenix appears to be shy, she certainly is not. Tyler certainly appears to be more outgoing, but when it comes to trying new things, and getting up in front of a group, Phoenix is my gal. However, I am sure she would use the word "loathe" to describe her dislike for taking pictures for me.

sartorial kid - phoenix

T-shirt: OshKosh for Kohl's, $5
Sweatshirt: Abercrombie, thrifted with tags, $3
Jeans: Old Navy (last year), $15
Shoes: Toms (last year), $35
Headband: Etsy (unsure of the shop name), $20 for large bulk supply

Phoenix actually started rehearsals for a play she signed up for in theater class at school recently. The name of the play is Princess Whatshername, and as you can probably guess, it's a parody of some sort. I am not exactly sure what the full storyline is yet, but it must be quite the story because Phoenix wears a Dorothy Gaile costume. I'm just gonna go with it. I am sure it will be cute and we are all looking forward to it. Ironically, she is not the least bit nervous about being in front of an audience at all.

Phoenix is also our little tomboy, so dresses are completely out of the question for her, so how they got her to wear a dress without putting up a fight is beyond me. Jeans are more her cup of tea and I don't blame her because dresses aren't really my thing either.

Sartorial Kid | Oswald Cobblepot's Worst Nightmare

Batman Tee: Walmart
Cargo Shorts: Carter's for Kohl's

We keep it real around here when it comes to clothes and shopping for them. Top favorite stores to shop at include Old Navy, Target, Kohl's, and the thrift stores. I can't remember the last time I shopped at somewhere other than those stores (well, except that one time I bought a Batman T-shirt).

Elijah has a pretty large assortment of superhero T-shirts, so on most days, that is exactly what he will be wearing. He usually knows beforehand exactly which one he wants to wear that day, and there is absolutely no convincing him otherwise.

And just for fun... If this mama wanted to play matchy matchy with her little mister, I would totally wear this outfit I created in Polyvore!

4 year old fashionista | tyler style file 4 of 4

001

i don't think there was ever a time that tyler wasn't interested in pretty dresses, princess crowns, and other pretty things.  even when she was one, she loved dressing up in the dramatic play center of her childcare classroom.

she definitely has a personality to match some of her unique outfits and so many people have suggested that i get her into commercials or some other form of television, but that is really not something we have ever looked into.

003013

as much as she likes clothes, she loves shoes even more. she LOVES to go into a shoe store and has about 20 pairs of shoes of her own. she changes shoes several times a day and currently wears her most recent pair of shoes to bed every night.

whatever. i have learned to pick my battles!

this outfit really isn't that bad, but so many people have asked me if it bothers me that some days her clothes don't match or that her hair looks crazy if she does it herself, or that she is wearing different patterns from head to toe.

081_picnik

my answer is simple...no.

there was a time that it bothered me and i would fuss and fight with my children about what they were wearing and all it did was waste 20 minutes or more of my precious daily time and give me a headache.  not to mention, i was only teaching them to care what other people think of them based on how they look.

082

why should they care. why should I care. they are kids.

now, i don't allow my children to wear anything inappropriate. not just inappropriate for society, but the situation, meaning, i expect them to look appropriate for church and i usually choose their clothes when i take portraits of them. but, other than that i put no restrictions on how they wear their clothes.
some days, in my opinion, they look CR-A-ZZZZY, like a little punky brewster, but i never criticize.
i truly feel that allowing them to dress themselves boosts their self confidence and is one small avenue of creative expression.

plus, it really is a stress reliever to surrender in that battle.

even i don't like to wear dresses and skirts, but tyler will wear them every day.

back at christmas, while out at kohl's to do some gift shopping, she slipped the fanciest dress i will never wear, and that was at least 10 sizes too big, into my purchases without me knowing.

luckily, i caught it before the actual purchase.

the outfit
purple long sleeve shirt with  rhinestone embellishments - kohl's
denim skirt - old navy

4 year old fashionista | tyler style file 1 of 4

021

a little over a year ago tyler started showing signs of her own personal style. very unlike the style of her sisters, i honestly don't know where this love for clothes, shoes, jewelry, and make up came from.  she loves to get dressed up, read fashion magazines, and enjoys doing my hair on a daily basis (she must be trying to tell me something).

010012

just the other day, phoenix had pajama day at school and i had the brilliant idea that we all would celebrate pajama day and allow tyler and elijah to stay in their pajamas too.

tyler kicked and screamed and threw a fit because she DID NOT want to wear her pajamas.

her reason..."someone might see me!"

DSC_2870

tyler chooses all of her outfits on her own. head to toe. she tells me how to do her hair, and some days she does it herself. on the days i do it, the routine usually is for me to guess what she wants. if she doesn't like it, she tells me. some mornings i do her hair for well over 20 minutes.

the outfit

yellow and gray striped shirt - old navy
boyfriend jeans - old navy
leopard print coat - crazy 8
star print shoes - converse
 aqua sunglasses - old navy

she has more style than i do!
