i may not have the best advice in the world, nor do i have the answer to every question my children may ask, but it makes me proud as a mother, to know that my children feel confident enough to come to me to talk, for advice, or to help them with their problems. it may be as simple as coming to me to tie a shoe, to help with a big word in a book being read, or even just to tell me about their day. i have had some pretty deep conversations with my children and i have had some pretty silly one's too.
i remember a day as i drove to work last year and money was a bit tight for us, and my oldest daughter asked me why God hasn't answered her prayers to give us more money.
try explaining that one!
how did i handle that? well, i first explained that it is rather silly to be praying for money when there are so many others who need God's help right now, and that God has blessed us with so much already. we hadn't lost our home, we were all healthy, and we had food to put on our table and clean clothes to wear each day, as well as the love of a family.
do we ever really need more than that? isn't the rest just icing on the cake?
the important thing is that i discussed her concerns with her and ensured her that God had indeed answered her prayers, just not the way she was hoping. he had provided us with enough money to keep on going each day and that was all that we needed at the time.
i fear the struggles she may have had with her faith in our Lord if i were not there to help her through this moment. it's not just about her relationship with Christ, it's about her relationship with me. the relationship with all of my children.
i want to know it all. and i want my children to feel comfortable talking to me about anything.

since school in starting (started today for my older 3 and starts next week for my little kindergartner) plan to talk to your children about school this week. talk about their favorite subjects, some of the fun projects they did the previous year, what some of their goals are, talk about what to expect (especially to your younger children who are going to school for the first time this year). don't forget to talk about how they will be getting back and forth to school and all of the people who will pick your child up if you are unable to.
