while out christmas shopping a few weeks ago, i came across an inexpensive cake pop maker at walmart. i bought it on a whim because it was so well priced and knew that if it was a bust, i wouldn't be out too much money.
i finally used it yesterday and i can't tell you enough how super easy it is to use and the cake pops came out perfect. the trick is figuring out the right amount of cake mix to put in each hole so it doesn't cook over the edges. it didn't take very long to get it right.
after i baked all the pops, i let them cool for about 3 hours. i think this is the most important part because if you try to dip the pops in the chocolate while they are still warm, the chocolate isn't going to harden and you are going to have a huge mess.
when you are ready to dip them in the chocolate, poke a lollipop stick or a skewer into the pop and dip it into the chocolate very carefully. they can come off the stick easily.
once you have dipped the pops in the chocolate, quickly shake on the sprinkles, nuts, or whatever you prefer. i also thought about using crushed candy cane pieces. or, you can simply stop at dipping them in the chocolate and leave them like that.
once i was done dipping each one, i laid them on a piece of wax paper and put them in the fridge long enough to harden the chocolate. on the other side of each one was a small flat spot, but it was hardly noticeable in my opinion. you can stand them up straight too, but i found that when i did that the chocolate would drip off. i know it has been done like this by the professionals, but honestly, i would have definitely served them to anyone the way i did them. plus, i was just trying to get them done. dipping over 50 some pops is a lot of work.
and that was just one box of cake mix.
i am not sure of the name brand of the cake pop maker i purchased but, i got it at walmart for approximately $15. it makes 6 cake pops at a time. there are some out there that make more at one time and there are also some that cost more than the one i purchased. regardless of the brand you chose, i would certainly recommend getting one if you are interested in making cake pops.
