I have slowly been eliminating a lot of foods from our diets at home because I just don't find them healthy. I want my children to grow up with a better understanding that there are so many options for foods that can taste great and be nutritious.
Some of the items I have eliminated are jellies and jams, sugar sweetened cereals, Pop-Tarts, cookies, Fruit roll-ups, and other things of that unhealthy nature. I would like to part ways with other items like ketchup, barbeque sauce, mayo, and creamy salad dressings. Those are items that I usually include in certain recipes and have yet to find substitutions for some of my favorites that use them. And we are currently working on eliminating butter. Instead, we use Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Except in mashed potatoes...that's just not good! Gotta have the butter there!
Now, don't get me wrong, it is a process that doesn't happen overnight, and occasionally my kids do get these items, but it is strictly on a once in a while basis. We do bake cookies, we do bake cupcakes, we even make candy, but it is not a weekly activity by NO means and usually around a holiday.
My children do not get a dessert every night after completing their meal. And the "sweet" part of their diets usually come from fruits...fresh fruits (or frozen and no sugar added). Fruit in can...NO WAY!
Weelicious is a great site that a friend pointed me to that has great ideas for healthy options for children. There are videos and recipes for everything from baby food to shrimp meals. I love the videos because I can see exactly how it is done.
The recipes are also kid friendly, so your little ones can help out too. I love that part!
